Yes, yes, I admit it, sometimes I prefer valses to tangos. One of my (perhaps 20) favorite valses isn’t so much for dancing, but more for listening; however, it has an interesting and worthwhile story. “Que nadie sepa mi sufrir” (translation: Let no one know how much I suffer) isn’t a true Vals criollo, but more of a Vals Peruano. It was written in 1936 by the Argentinian Angel Amato under the pseudonym Angel Cabral [1]. Lyrics were added by Enrique Dizeo (also from Argentina). Over the next 20 years, the song became a hit throughout South America, but it very rarely appears at milongas. Here is the original text and the English translation:

Besides an early version by Hugo del Carril from 1936, the best-known version is that of the singer Alberto Castillo (Jorge Dragone Orchestra [4]) from 1953.
At the Teatro Opera de Buenos Aires, a French singer named Edith Piaf heard this piece (performed by Castillo) and had its author, Michel Rivgauche, rework it to suit French tastes, both in terms of the lyrics and the music [1]. This led to the creation of the song “La Foule” (translation: The Crowd), which was released in 1957 and became a huge success [2, 3]. Here is the original recording with Edith Piaf:
If you listen closely, you can also recognize the melody in a song by Reinhard Mey (Dieter Malineck, Ulla und ich).
These are just a few of the many hundreds of recordings of “Que nadie sepa mi sufrir”.
