The educated Tanguero

Sexteto Milonguero

I’ve now finished listening to the stack of new CDs from Buenos Aires, so I have to talk about something else today. Fortunately, I had a conversation last week with a tango colleague from Germany, and he asked me to listen to a song by the Sexteto Milonguero, which directly inspired this post. Without CDs, I’m entirely reliant on online resources, which thankfully isn’t a problem with this orchestra, as their CDs are available in Germany.

Many people say it’s difficult to dance to contemporary orchestras because they don’t focus on the needs of dancers. Apart from a few notorious ‘Piazzolla’ orchestras, I disagree. The Sexteto Milonguero actually plays for dancers, which makes their music very interesting.

The orchestra was founded in 2006 [1]. It consists of two violins, played by Marisol Canessa and Gustavo Garay, a bandoneon (Mauricio Jost), a piano (Juan Rivero), a bass (played by Christian Sepulveda), and Javier di Ciriaco as vocalist. Javier was a member of the Jorge Arduh Orquesta Típica from 1999 to 2003. Marisol Canessa played with the Orquestra Escuela de Tango. These are just a few examples of the true professionals playing here.

Their first CD, ‘Pa’que bailen,’ was released in 2007, followed by a second CD, ‘7,’ in 2010. Their last CD, ‘Doble o Nada,’ was released in 2013.
