During my last stay in Buenos Aires, I bought two CDs by the Fabio Hager Sexteto (Retorno and Zona de Riesgo), a very special and versatile tango orchestra. Their repertoire ranges from jazzy quickstep (Rubias de New York) and traditional songs (Recuerdo and El Apache Argentino) to Piazzolla pieces (Zita, Libertango) and some beautiful reinterpretations of older songs (Patetico). The latter, in particular, is very modern in its arrangement and very dynamic. I was very impressed. I think it’s a wonderful piece for concert performances and believe we’ll see many couples performing it in the future (see below).

Not all songs can be played in a milonga, but if you are looking for a modern-style tango orchestra that is firmly rooted in the musical tango heritage, this orchestra is definitely worth a try.

OK, a few videos, let’s start with ‘Recuerdo’
And for Piazzolla fans, here’s ‘Adios Nonino’:

and finally my favorite (Patetico), danced by Facundo Montenegro and Katerina Marao (sorry for taking the focus away from the musicians, but it really is a beautiful show):
